Legal

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Trivia Mountain collects, what it does not, and the choices you have. It applies to the website at https://triviamountain.com.

Last updated: 26 August 2026

The short version

  • There are no accounts, so we never ask for your name, email address or any other personal detail.
  • Your score is never stored or transmitted. It exists in your browser for the length of the round and then it is gone.
  • We use Google Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages get read. It sets cookies, and you can opt out.
  • Advertising is served by third parties, including Google, who may also use cookies. You can opt out of personalised ads — the links are below.

The full detail follows. Where the summary and the detail differ, the detail governs.

1. Who we are

Trivia Mountain is an independently operated website providing a free daily trivia game at https://triviamountain.com. In data protection terms, the operator of Trivia Mountain is the data controller for the limited processing described in this policy. You can reach us at contact@triviamountain.com.

2. Information we do not collect

The game requires no account and no registration, and there is no login, no profile and no newsletter. As a result we do not ask for, collect or store:

  • Your name, email address, postal address or telephone number.
  • Any payment or financial information — nothing on the Site is for sale.
  • Your quiz scores, answers or game history. Gameplay state is held in your browser’s memory while you play and is discarded the moment you close or reload the page. It is never sent to our servers, and it is never sent to any analytics or advertising service.
  • Any special category data such as health, biometric, political or religious data.

If you choose to email us, we will of course hold your message and your email address for as long as it takes to deal with it. That is entirely voluntary and initiated by you.

3. Information collected automatically

Like virtually every website, our hosting provider records standard technical information when your browser requests a page. This includes your IP address, browser type and version, device and operating system, the page requested, the referring page and a timestamp.

This data is used only to deliver the site, keep it secure, diagnose faults and detect abuse such as automated scraping or denial-of-service traffic. It is not used to build a profile of you, and it is not combined with advertising data by us. The Site is hosted on Vercel, which processes these server logs on our behalf as a data processor and retains them for a limited period under its own retention policy.

4. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files that a website, or a service embedded in it, stores on your device. Trivia Mountain sets no cookies of its own for the game itself: there is no login to remember, no preferences to save, and the quiz does not write your progress or your score to your device at all.

Cookies are, however, set on this Site by the third-party services we use:

  • Google Analytics sets first-party cookies — typically named _ga and _ga_<property> — which distinguish one visitor from another and recognise returning visitors so that visit counts are not wildly overstated. These are described in section 5.
  • Advertising partners, including Google, may set their own cookies to measure and personalise the adverts you see. These are described in section 6.

You can block or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings, and most browsers offer a setting to reject third-party cookies specifically. Doing so will not prevent you playing — the quiz works fully with cookies disabled.

5. Analytics

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4, a web analytics service provided by Google, to understand how many people visit the Site, which pages they read, and how they found us. It uses the cookies described in section 4 and collects information including your IP address, browser and device type, an approximate location derived from your IP address, the referring page, the pages you view and how long you spend on them.

We use this only in aggregate, to decide what to improve. Specifically: we do not send Google Analytics any information about your quiz answers or your score, we have not enabled any feature that would let us identify an individual visitor, and we have not linked the analytics property to advertising or remarketing audiences. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses.

Google processes this data as a data processor on our behalf, and as described in how Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can stop Google Analytics collecting your data entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser.

Vercel Web Analytics

We also use Vercel Web Analytics, a privacy-focused, cookieless service: it does not use cookies, does not store identifiers on your device, and does not track visitors across other websites. The data we see from it is aggregated — page view counts, referrers, broad country and device category — and cannot be used to identify you individually.

6. Advertising

Trivia Mountain is free to play and is funded by advertising displayed alongside the content. Adverts are served by third-party advertising networks, including Google.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve adverts based on your prior visits to this website or to other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve adverts to you based on your visit to this Site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • These vendors may collect information such as your IP address, device identifiers, browser information and interactions with adverts, in accordance with their own privacy policies.

We do not have access to, and do not control, the cookies used by these advertisers, and we do not receive the personal data they collect. We never share any information with advertisers ourselves, because we do not hold any to share.

Opting out of personalised advertising

You can limit or switch off personalised advertising at any time:

Opting out does not remove advertising from the Site. It means the adverts you see will be less relevant to you.

7. Children’s privacy

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since the Site collects no personal information from anyone, this is unlikely to arise — but if you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Legal bases for processing

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies to you, our legal bases are: our legitimate interests in operating, securing and maintaining the Site (for server logs and cookieless aggregate analytics), and consent where consent is required for analytics and advertising cookies, collected through the consent mechanism presented in the applicable regions. You may withdraw that consent at any time using the opt-out routes in sections 5 and 6, or by clearing and blocking cookies in your browser.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request its deletion, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. We do not sell or share your personal information, and we receive no money for any data. Note that advertising partners may process data for cross-context behavioural advertising under their own policies; the opt-out links in section 6 are the most effective way to control this.

Trivia Mountain is operated from Canada, where the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) applies. Under PIPEDA you may request access to any personal information we hold about you, challenge its accuracy, and ask how it has been used and disclosed. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

To exercise any of these rights, email contact@triviamountain.com. Because there are no accounts and we collect nothing that directly identifies you, we will usually have nothing on file that can be linked back to you — but we will confirm that in writing, and point you to the analytics and advertising opt-outs that put the remaining choices in your hands.

10. Data retention

We hold no personal data on our own systems — there is no user database, because there are no users to put in one. Server logs are retained by our hosting provider for a limited period in line with its standard policy. Data collected through Google Analytics is held by Google and retained for the period configured on our analytics property, after which user-level and event-level records are deleted; aggregated reports persist beyond that but identify nobody. Cookieless aggregate analytics contain no personal data and are retained indefinitely. Email correspondence is kept only as long as it takes to resolve your enquiry.

11. International transfers

The Site is delivered through a global content delivery network, and our hosting, analytics and advertising providers operate internationally. This means the technical data described above may be processed in countries outside your own, including the United States. Those providers apply their own safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, for such transfers.

12. Security

The Site is served exclusively over HTTPS. Because we store no personal data, the practical risk to you from a breach of our systems is minimal. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

13. Links to other sites

Adverts and occasional references may link to websites we do not operate. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those sites, and this policy does not apply to them. We would encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit.

14. Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated to reflect changes to the Site, to our providers, or to the law. The current version always appears on this page and the revision date is shown at the top. Significant changes will be reflected in that date, so it is worth checking back occasionally.

15. Contact

Questions about this policy, or about privacy on Trivia Mountain generally, can be sent to contact@triviamountain.com or submitted through the contact page. Please put “Privacy” in the subject line so it gets to the right place quickly.
